How to type faster

  • Touch type: rest your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and use every finger, without looking down.
  • Accuracy first: slow down until you hit 95% accuracy, then speed builds on its own.
  • Practice daily: ten minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
  • Check the hardware: a key that sticks or misses will drag your score down. Run the keyboard test if a letter keeps going wrong.

FAQ

How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?

Words per minute counts every 5 correctly typed characters, including the space after each word, as one word, then divides by the minutes of the test. Mistyped words don't count toward WPM.

What is a good typing speed?

The average adult types about 40 WPM. 60–70 WPM is fast and enough for most office jobs, 80–100 WPM is very fast, and above 120 WPM is competitive typing territory.

What does accuracy mean?

Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that matched the word you were typing. Aim for 95% or higher: correcting mistakes costs more time than typing a little slower.

Should I do a 15, 30 or 60 second typing test?

60 seconds is the standard and the most comparable with other tests. 15 seconds measures burst speed, and 30 seconds is a good balance for practice.
