How to test your keyboard
- Make sure this page is focused: click anywhere on it first.
- Press every key once. Each one should turn green. A key that stays white isn’t being detected.
- To check for a sticky key, press it and let go: it should turn blue only while you hold it.
- For gaming, hold your usual combinations (W + A + Shift + Space) and check they all light up together.
Common keyboard problems
| Symptom | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
| A key never lights up | Dirt under the key or a worn switch. Blow out the gap with compressed air; on a mechanical keyboard, reseat or replace the switch. |
| A key stays blue after you let go | A stuck key or switch. Clean around it; on a laptop, check nothing is wedged under the keycap. |
| Some combinations don’t register | Ghosting: the keyboard’s rollover limit. Common on cheap and laptop keyboards. |
| Wrong characters appear | The system keyboard layout is different from the physical keyboard (US vs UK, for example). |
| Nothing works at all | Try another USB port, replace the batteries, or re-pair a Bluetooth keyboard. |
Mac keyboard test
The keyboard test works the same on a Mac. Command shows as Win/⌘ and Option as Alt. The Fn key, the Touch ID button and media keys (brightness, volume) are handled by macOS itself and never reach the browser, so they stay untested here. If a letter key fails, check System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts and that Slow Keys isn’t turned on under Accessibility.
Keyboard test vs typing test
This keyboard test checks the hardware: does each key register, and which ones stick or ghost. A typing test measures you instead: how many words per minute you type and how accurately. If a key fails here, no typing test result will be right until it’s fixed.
Cleaning a keyboard
- Unplug it or turn the laptop off first.
- Turn it upside down and tap gently, then use compressed air at an angle between the keys.
- Wipe the keys with a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, never sprayed directly.
FAQ
How do I test my keyboard online?
Open this page and press every key. Each key lights up blue while you hold it and turns green once it has worked. Keys that stay white after you press them aren't registering.
How do I check for keyboard ghosting?
Hold down several keys at once, for example W, A, S, D and Space for gaming. All of them should light up together, and “Most keys at once” shows how many the keyboard reported. If a key you're holding doesn't light up, the keyboard can't register that combination.
What is key rollover?
Rollover is how many keys a keyboard can register at the same time. Cheap keyboards often manage 2 or 3 in some combinations (2KRO/3KRO). Gaming keyboards advertise 6KRO or NKRO, meaning six or any number of keys.
Why does a key work in this test but not in a game or app?
If the key lights up here, the keyboard is fine. The problem is the app's key binding, a different keyboard layout in your system settings, or a feature like Windows Filter Keys or Sticky Keys.
Does it work with laptop and Mac keyboards?
Yes. Laptop keyboards usually have no numpad, so those keys stay untested. On a Mac, Command shows as Win/⌘. Some keys, like Fn, are handled by the keyboard itself and never reach the browser.
